My driver's side door won't open!

Last night I left work (parked outside in the freezing cold). When I went to shut the driver's side door, it would not latch shut. After opening/closing the locks a few times, I went outside and locked it with the key lock, and it worked! Only problem was, the drivers side door will now not re-open.

The door lock pin goes up and down with central locking system (key, etc), but the door does not open, not matter if pin is in locked or unlocked position. Pulling on the door handle doesn't do diddly!

I'm assuming some kind of lock cable snapped, and I'm hoping I can get it fixed today. I will call dealer and my local independent guy (no longer under warranty). Has anyone had a similar problem? Any solutions to try? TIA.

Update: resolved!

Ok, so I jumped the gun. Apparently things thawed out in my garage last night. Opens just fine now.

Beware of an actuator which is about to go bad, have your dealer check it out. I've also heard of a bad insulation of the lock mechanism which allows moisture to enter and then freeze if temps get too low. I had the exact same thing happen to me about a week before my driver side door handle completely broke. I had to blow dry the lock to get it to latch again. Good news is, the dealer replaced the door handle and actuator under "goodwill" (the warranty had just expired in January), and my dealership did me right. Only bad news is- if you have to replace the door handle, they have to paint it body color before they put it on.

Good luck with it!

So are you saying that TSB is not a "covered service" since my warranty has expired? Any idea of how much it would run to repair?

Check this outBimmerfest link)

I think that'll help you out. Also check out this review from Car & Driver.

If you get static from your dealer because your car is off warranty, do as UCrew suggests and ask them if they can cover it under goodwill.

I got the same problem, if my car is wet and the temp. get's below 0C...
My dealer told me that this issue will occur on all X5 new and old. But some X5 is better and never going to frezze. He also told me that the unmount the inside of the dor and dry the door over the night and put some oil (water-proof) in the wire that goes from the door handle to lock-box. The rear doors is connected directly to the lock-box and will not frezze. Only the front doors with a wire from the outer door handle to the lock-box.
Will be trying to fix this issue by my self and hope I solve it!
