fitting e39 m5 headers onto x5 4.8

I was at a shop last week that does aftermarket installations, and i heard the guy ask himself a question, he was like "i wonder if this thing can fit the e39 m5 headers?

and i automatically started wondering, is that possible? or are they different sizes and everything

I think it would fit.

My mechanic transplanted an X5 4.6i motor into a 7 series and installed an E39 M5 spec Supersprint Headers + x-pipe and mufflers.

He's been trying to convince me to have the SS Headers installed on my '04 4.4 but I pretty much pushed off the idea...

Would the headers really change performance?

Exhaust manifolds are designed around other characteristics of an engine (intake, engine geometry, compression, etc etc), so using such a part meant for another engine, used in a completely different application is not a good idea. My .02.

I'd say yes if the E53 OEM Headers are similar to the E39 M5 headers...

I doubt they'd fit. Headers need to be designed to go around other things in the engine bay such as steering components, frame, etc. and they need to end up in the right spot to match up with the rest of the exhaust. I'd say it's highly unlikely... My $.02
