Battery/Electrical Issue
Hello all.
Found X5world surfing for some answers to a problem that I'm having with my wife's 2001 X5 4.4i (sport package)...BTW, excellent site with excellent resources. She went out to start her ride this morning (she drives it daily) to hear the wonderful "clicks" of a dying battery. I jump started it later on that afternoon and headed to Autozone to get a new battery, considering the STOCK battery was still being used. Needless to say, I changed the battery and everything seemed good to go... I now have notice some odd occurances happening when I turn off the X - I first noticed that the lower foot vents had not shut off completely and continued to run for a few hours after I got home from changing the battery. I played around with the climate controls and that issue seems to be resolved; however, now it's "clicking" AGAIN, and it has a brand new battery. I'm going to let it sit for the rest of the night (it's now about 3:40 AM in TX) and attempt to start it in the morning. Am I missing something? Do I need to reset the electrical system after I change the battery? Is there a larger problem here? Sorry for the long post, but wanted to give as much detail as possible. Any suggestions are very much appreciated...Thanks! *BTW, my wife's 2001 X5 is used, so it is no longer under any type of warranty at the current time. |

This problem seems like it could be a faulty final stage resitor in the climate contol system. This seems to be the cause of a lot of electrical issues in the X5.

I've been reading around the forum and just read your post...I was thinking along the same lines as I was doing research on the forum; however, I've had no other symtoms of the FSR crapping out on me (i.e. climate control issues, AC problems, etc.).

Hi there ,
here's my 2 pennyworth as I understand if you have a flat battery and need to jump start ::immediately the car starts you have to load the alternator via the battery, to do this put all the electrics on ( headlights, heater , wipers, heated windows ,indicators, rear fogs, front fogs) this loads/sets the alternator and tells it to put in a high amount of charge. This info is in the car manual. Regards |

These types of faults can be very hard to fine.
The fact that the fan stays on suugests that something is not shutting down correctly. The draw from a fan motor wil flatten a battery very quickly. A first thing to try may be to disconnect the battery for half an hour or so - this will at least shut all the electrical systems down. The electrical sometimes get upset when the battery goes flat. Charge the battery and reconnect it and see if it happens again.
