M Steering Wheel Retrofit - 2000 X5

I am brand new to the X5 world/experience and interested in doing the DIY M3 Steering wheel conversion (above). The concern I have is this/my 2000 X5 comes with this steering wheel (below):

So can the conversion be done, as this four spoke wheel is not the standard sport steering wheel? I assume if yes, I would need to purchase the M steering wheel and an air bag for it. Anything else???

FYI, that is not my interior.

Just the new wheel and a new round air bag

You're right - you'll need the airbag too, and that's it! Very easy install. Look at the home page articles for more info. I'd suggest Morristown BMW (one of our sponsors w/really good prices) for the parts unless you can get a better deal on ebay. Oh, welcome to X5world!

I still believe that this is the absolute best bang for the buck mod that you can do on your X5

The wheel is like $350, the bag is like $600 unless you find a deal on Ebay

steering wheel is something you touch the most in your car. Big difference in feel and leather.

Okay, I thank all of you for your input. The M Steering Wheel Retrofit - 2000-2003 Style article states to contact "Crevier BMW sells these for $325 plus shipping (airbag not included)." So which is it, Crevier or Morristown? The closest BMW dealer to me (in FL) is Fort Lauderdale BMW - Pembroke Pines.

I did find an airbag on ebay.

It has a 'Buy it now' price of $524.99 plus $29.99 for shipping. Doesn't seem like a big savings to me at all.

Yeah, not much of a savings on the airbag it seems. I'd give Nick at Morristown a shout to see what he can do for prices - I've seem some pretty good ones from him come across the screen. Crevier has on-line parts pricing (I think Nick might too, but I'd check w/him directly) so you can just plug in the part numbers and see what you come up with.

Let us know how you make out!

P.S. I'd be a little leery of buying a device designed to save my life off ebay anyhow... - but that's just me...
