x5 made a sharp noise upon starting

man so i left the x (2003 3.0i) outside last night (bad move) and it was like -20c anyways in the morning when i started the car i heard a sharp noise that came from somewhere under the hood. the noise lasted a split second.

has this happened to anyone else? or what could it possibily be? the car drives fine but im kinda worried about the noise. plus this has never happened b4.

hmm so i guess this is common? however does anyone know which part that caused the noise? the belt or the fan?

Could be slipping belts due to the cold temps. Open your hood and check it out....

Sorry. I cant help you on this one. But if I we're to guess judging by the sound that my car made, I would have to say belts or pulley.

Could you clarify what type of sound it was and did your car kinda hesitate for that split second before starting up?

i dont know if the car hesitated cuz the noise pretty much had all of my attnetion at the time, i opened the hood but couldnt see anything.

as for the noise, hmm, this a tough one. whats the kinda noise ur car made? we pro had the same thing.

what kewl x5 said prob makes sense, the belt was cold so it sliped a little bit.

you mean like a motorized grinding sound perhaps?

i've heard that before upon starting the engine on a cold morning.

i've always just attributed it to the cold.

i don't think it's anything severe.

Yeah! Tricky question. The sound?!?!? Hmmmm.... like a high pitched whine with a little hint of metal to metal.

The best i can come up with is a streetbike revving but on an engine compartment size scale.

But the sound doesn't worry me as it has happened on the other cars I have owned and this ranges from Honda to Jeep to Mercedes to BMW. Same sound on every car. On cold winter morning starts of course.
