!! $800 to remove muffler???

The local muffler shop wants 800 bucks to remove my rear mufflers and put in straight pipes.
Does that sound right?
Some people on the board have done the same thing and I was wondering what it costed them?

It is not the rear mufflers, it is the resonator. It should not cost much. I had mine done for only $40 at a muffler shop.

It sounds right if the tax is $750

Do you have a 4.4i or a 3.0i?

I think i might have mixed something up.
The resonator delete is removing the mufflers or is it the thing where an X pipe would go?
Its a 4.4

I feel like an idiot
Maybe thats why they wanted so much.

That is more like what you should pay or find another shop.

Your resonator is before the mufflers (via the direction of the exhaust). It looks like a long narrow muffler.

Here is a link to a diagram of the exhaust system on Real OEM: (4.6 pictures has the idential layout with different tips and different mufflers)

http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...80&hg=18&fg=20

Many members have replaced the resonator with an X-pipe to increase the exhaust tone. I would think the difference in back pressure would be minimal.

Someone posted a link to the Magnaflow X-pipe the other day. You can search the site or the web to find it. I think it cost around $80.

$725 is rediculous to install an X-pipe. Find a different shop. Then get a third quote. I would guess around $100 to $200 plus the $80 or so for an X-pipe. (Anyone else agree / disagree??)

Some guys have had shops make them an X-pipe from scratch. Porbably easier to buy the Magnaflow.

Search the forum for information about a rattling sound on a cold engine when the resonator is removed. I have not researched it that much and others can hop in and give you some info on that.

Good Luck!
