couple ?s about my new 06 4.8 ...

Picked it up in cleveland, OH and drove it to columbia, SC. The drive through mountains was great. X5 got so dirty though. By the time I got home it was covered in so much salt and dirt that it didn't look black anymore.
It has around 900 miles on it now and I have couple questions;
- The brakes start to grab after about the first inch of pedal travel.
- Steering wheel gets heavier when using the brakes and making a turn(at any speed).
What do you guys think? Normal?

The brakes probably need to break in. Make sure to give it a good wash and clean the wheel assemblys well. Maybe after a good 1000-2000 miles the pads will wear down a bit and be less agressive.

The oem brakes are a little grabby on the 4.8. It has larger brake components than any other X, even compared to the 4.4. You'll get used to it after a while. The steering does feel a little heavy with the AWD, especially with the low profile 20" wheel & tire set up, but again, just something to get used to. Enjoy your new X. It is an awesome ride.

What I meant was when I push the brake pedal, the first inch of travel does nothing. Feels like no brakes. Then after about an inch of pedal travel the brakes start to grab. My M3s brakes are like that but it has 33000 miles on it.

Brakes usually bed in after about 200-500 miles, but you were on the highway probably most of the time. Might want to have the dealer check that out.

As far as the steering feel, the 4.8is that I drove had incredibly LIGHT steering at all speeds. Frankly I couldn't believe it. It was significantly lighter than my 4.4 with 19" tires. While it felt pretty easy moving around a parking lot, I felt like I had less confidence on the highway going 60+. I have to say that I love the 4.8 in every way (especially in the right color) but the steering was the worst I've felt in any BMW and I've driven a ton going back to the late 70's.

The steering wheel at slow speed is much lighter compare to my M3. On the highway though it's firm which I like. What concerns me is, as I mentioned, how it gets heavy while making a turn and using the brakes around city driving. Maybe it's because of the AWD or the variable steering. I don't know. I'll have the dealer take a look at it when i take it in for an oil change soon.
