SES ligh came on tonight
I've had my SES light on a couple of weeks now, which i assumed where caused by a faulty ABS sensor on the right side wheel. I replaced the sensor today, and after a while the SES light went out. After driving the car around for about an hour, i stopped, and noticed that the car was'nt running smoothly while idling. I entered the test mode and saw from the digital rpm that it was running between 650 and 850.. In addition there was some vibration / shaking that could be felt sitting in the drivers seat.. After a little while, the SES light came back on........... While driving the car i cant tell that anything is wrong. The car runs at it should. I had the CCV and head gasket issue about 2 months ago.. It was fixed and worked fine till about three weks ago. After a really cold night, there where pressure building up in the engine, and some oil and air escaped out via the oil refill cap.. I let the pressure out of the engine, and it seemed i where lucky since i could'nt find any oil leak, and the engine did'nt build any pressure.. Since that incident, there has not been any idnications that the CCV is'nt working as it should.. Also, i had some rattling sounds on top of the engine on the drivers side. I have another post on the forum here, and the DISA valve was suggested to cause the rattling sound. It seems now, that the rettling is gone...? Any thoughts..? Could it be that the DISA valve failed completly.? Does it sound like something with the CCV issue could cause this.? I guess the sensor issue would'nt cause any of these symptoms.? |

Well yeah, i thought so too..
But wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts about what could cause this... It's late friday night here in Norway, and i woun't have a chance to check the codes until over the weekend... So..... |

Sounds like the DISA valve. Its not the valve that fails, but the flap inside that opens and closes to control air flow into the intake runners.

The only way to fix the problem is to replace the whole DISA unit.

Ok.
Thanks Charlie.. Not the worst thing that could happen, the DISA valve i mean.. I'll take it off and inspect it, and then order a new one if it is broken.. I've got my money on the DISA valve, as it has been rattling for a while.. Is there any danger of parts coming loose and get sucked into the engine...? Im not sure about how the parts in that area works... |

A little update.
I took the car to a garage where a friend of my works.. I used a universal obd reader to ceck the codes.. It did'nt bring up any bmw codes, but said something about ixtures on cylinder 1 and 2.. I guess this is the gas/air mix... I unscrewed the valve, and it looked just about the same as on Charlies pics... It was broken off in one end, and wedged.. I took out the flap and screwed the valve back on.. Now its running smooth on idle, and the SES light is off.. It also rides as usual.. So, my next question is: what does this valve do..? Ill order a replacements, and hopefully ill get it next week.. Can i drive without the flap in the meanwhile.? |

You can drive without the flap and put the unit back in place to seal the hole up. The SES light will come back on though within a short amount of time. The engine will continue to misfire and idle poorly until you replace it. The car will always appear normal once you clear the codes, but will progressively get worse and even possibly stall out on the road.
DISA = Dual Resonance Intake System. It is a butterfly system that switches to allow airflow from longer to shorter intake path's in the manifold. Longer = better low end torque Shorter = more high end H.P. Last edited by CharlieHustleX5; 03-06-2010 at 03:26 PM. |
