It was a fluke, not a common issue.

I wouldnt say fluke, but I wouldnt go as far as saying common issue either. With the latest cold snap, there have been multiple forum members that have had the Oil Separator/Crankcase Vent hose freeezing issue, myself included. Yes I agree, your X is probbably fine, however I would caution you to make sure that do a few things when it's cold out to make sure it stays that way.

1) Most forum members in Canada have been advised to run 0 weight oil in the winter. Makes it easier to cold start, and also doesnt take as long to get good and hot. I'm NOT saying go and switch right now, I'm saying to keep this in mind for possibly next winter.

2) Don't let her idle for more than a minute when it's cold. This isn't a cold hard fact (no pun intended) it's more of an observation that I have made in reading all the posts about this particular issue. Seems to me that letting her idle longer increases the risk, especially if it's only going to be a short drive. Which brings me to my next point....

3) Let the oil get nice and hot during your trip when it's cold out. This will evaporate off any condensation, which will not be able to freeze within your crankcase vent hoses or oil separator, the root cause of all these issues. With these items being stuffed way at the back of the engine bay, right up against the firewall, and near the top, they never really see the warmth from the engine that they should unless the oil flowing though is really nice and hot.

I certainly hope this helps, not trying to fear monger here, but rather keep you informed, so that you may be able to avoid the problem altogether.

Can you compile a list of "multiple members". Remember there are 10,000 members on this board, what % have had this issue? We have a bunch of people in cold regions.

Buddy, I wasnt knocking anything that you said. All I wanted to do was to provide the OP with a more detailed answer then "Don't worry about it, you'll be fine." And to answer your question, look through the treads over the last few weeks yourself and see how many of us have had the issue, as well as the postings that detail how many X5's are in at various dealerships having the same issue fixed.

Such as this one:

Post number 21.

Well I guess 50+ vehicles out of the X series production warrants worry.

If it breaks, take it to a dealer, it is no reason not to drive it...which is the question that was asked and that was answered.

If we're keeping tally, count me as one impacted by this condition. Happened on Superbowl Sunday.
