You can order the sport pkg with comfort seats - I did that on my 2006 X5, but ended up hating the comfort seats

So what's different between the Sport Seats and Comfort Seats other than the headrests?

It has an extra button controlling the back position. Also the height of headrest is automatic controllable. It's really useful when you take your X for a long road trip. |

I specified 2005 '05 3.0D Sport with Comfort seats due to the greater range of adjustments available. I find the Sport Seats very uncomfortable after about two hours behind the wheel. I was doing a lot of long distance driving (6 hours plus) and much prefer the Comfort seats, especially given I'm 2mters tall and of the "rugby player" build.
We have Sport seats on the E46 M Sport which I think are similar to the E53's apart from the headrest (which is attached via a single electric side pillar) and I find the side thigh supports just too tight for my comfort.

Comfort Seats are very much an acquired taste, IMO, and are more appropriate in some vehicles than others.
Comfort seats offer power articulation at the mid-back. They lack the side bolsters of the Sport Seats on the back and bottom, and take away the adjustable lower thigh support. Comfort Seats offer more seatback adjustability at the cost of less lateral support. In an E53 X5, I believe they come with power headrests. I had a set on my '03 530i and they were just okay. I didn't like the headrests. The seat bottoms were too flat. There was no lateral bolstering. I felt that this car, a Sport Pkg car, could have benefitted from the additional bolstering. I had sport seats in both my X5s and loved them. I have the Luxury Seating pkg on my 750i, which comes with Comfort Seats. In the seven-series, they are much more appropriate, and I really prefer them. They're more adjustable, have much better headrests, and have more lateral support than my 530i's Comfort Seats. I guess maybe it all comes down to what car you have them installed in, no? Regarding rarity, they're not all that rare in E53s. You'll see more of them installed in '06 X5s than in prior years. Not sure why, but that's been my experience. They are not cheap. A replacement set can run nearly $10k priced out at the parts counter.

thanks everyone for your help much appreciated, but i hate the comfort seats would have preferred sport seats for simplicity sakes and ease for repair, also i want to install a sheepskin seat cover and dont know how to remove headrest..i was told to just pry it off but that worries me that i might break the internal parts whic would result in an expensive fix..thanks rob

Comforts seats are the way to go in an X5, just like in a 7-series. Plus, Sport seats become uncomfortable after more than 1hr of sitting in them. The bottom cushion is just way too stiff.
