Bad news - think I'm done...
Took the X in for oil change and oil level sensor replacement the other day. Indy called me a little later and said that he has some bad news - front transfer case and drive shaft were in bad shape. I had been hearing the typical "clank" when shifting into D and R, but was unaware of this being a sign of something going wrong. With those repairs and few others needing to be done, I am looking at a total bill of around $6k. Wife and I had decided previously that the next time a major service came up that we would probably have to say goodbye to the X.
X is still driveable, but he said it is on borrowed time - just rolled 213K miles. Purchased a 2010 Grand Cherokee last year so I would not have to tow with the X anymore, so I guess that will become my daily driver because the wife wants a car that gets good gas mileage. Unfortunately with all of the issues we have had with the X and the cost of repairs, she is hesitant to buy another BMW.
Anyway, looks like the days are numbered for X5Dawg...
