Cool Dropped My Key - Doors Unlock - X Won't Start

Coming out of the house on the way to dinner and dropped my damn key as I locked the front door. Used the key (programmed button) to unlock the X, when I put the key in the ignition it would turn to the "start" position and all the usual dash lights and navigation light up but the starter would not engage. I drove the car only an hour before and the only thing that happened was me dropping the key (onto tile).

The shifter was in Park.

Has anyone had this happen to them? Does the chip in the key communicate with the car regarding starting? Possible I killed the chip in the key?

Oh, I only have the one key to my X. I only got the one when I bought it. I am the second owner.

Any insight is appreciated.

Could it be the battery in the vehicle is dead and the key drop and battery dying happening at the same time is coincdence?

Just thought since it looks like your X5 is a 2002. I've dropped my key many times and never had a starting problem.

BTW - even with a dead battery, interior and dashboard lights will still work - just not enough cranking power for starter.

Good luck.

For the hell of it I will hook up the jumper cables in the morning and give it a shot. I really doubt that is it but it can't hurt to try.....

This happened to our x, we keep dropping the key on the concrete. We had it towed because it wouldn't start, and then the dealer had our key initialized or something.I though the battery was dead because interior lights only turned on with a jumper cable. Nothing would happen to the engine, it was dead as a horse.
We have an '06,not sure about your model.

As far as I know the key does have coding that communicates with the ignition system; std anti-theft device. Looks like U need to order a new key...

He probably should order 2 keys - if the current one is dead. Nothing worse than having this happen away from home with no spare.

The tech at BMW told me the programming chip for the locks and windows is different than the chip for starting. So even though I could use the remote to unlock the doors it was dead. The new key cost me $175...

FYI here is where the keys are located on Real OEM. They are under Bodywork for some reason.
