With modern transmissions and synthetic fluids there isn't a real benefit to changing trans fluid before 100K. Unless of course you are in insanely stop and go driving conditions or tow regularly.

reason i asked this Q is cuz i read the tran fluid change faq here. my 03 3.0 x has 90,100 km on the clock.

100K is usually a good practice.

the gang from the US uses "K" as in 1000 of something. Much of the rest of the world uses k as in a kilometer. Take your pick: some say do it at 50,000 miles, some say pushing it to a 100,000 miles is doable... your current 90,100 kilometers is ~56,000 miles. So, do it now if you like, or wait. doesn't your owners manual recommend not to change this fluid at all?

I like changing fluids as just part of regular preventative maint.....
I did a diffy and atf flush around 32K miles. I did this when I put the summer tars on, so it was up on jacks, etc already. The fluids wasn't alot costwise - 2 quarts on the diffy and on the atf, if I recall, it was only 4 quarts from the drain/fill bolts. The atf fluid was around $12ish per bottle if I recall. I'm about to put the summer tars on. I had my last visit at the dealer recently and had both the brakes and coolant flushed. While the car is on jacks this month, I plan to do the transfer case and tranny again. The transfer case is only 1/2 quart and the tranny.....well, I'll be doing the tranny via the bolts again. Figure in the law of the diminishing returns....I'll have at least 60% fresh fluid by the time this flush is done. Mechanically, I'm just a lil nuts on fluids ;-) |

Agree with Sedoy that k isn't different than K, just that since the poster is from the GWN, we measure in km not in miles. MD is right in that 56,000 miles is very early to change transmission fluid, when it is a lifetime fluid anyway. Those that are talking 100,000 are talking miles, and so 160,000 km would be the local measure for that change.
Myself, I can't imagine changing transmission fluid at that mileage. Waste of time and money, not to mention depleting a non-renewable resource. Slightly off topic, but what the heck is a diffy? Is it like a biffy? Is it a differential equation? So many references recently to diffys, and trannys. Didn't know that this was a trans-gender site. We now resume regular programming. Save your money, and just drive your X5. There is no correlation between changing transmission fluid and longer transmission life.
