Can you help?

Hi Guys - posted this on x5drivers.co.uk - see thread below.... can any of you offer any advice?

Thanks

Posted: Sun Mar 11, 2007 9:41 am Post subject: Can't hear NAV voice? Hi

Just picked up my first X5 yesterday - 2002 Silver 3.0i sport - very impressed so far!

I have a quick question regarding the voice directions with the sat nav. My radio/cd is stopping when directions are meant to be coming in but I cannot hear the directions. I have tried turning the volume up on the for the nav voice but to no avail - can you help?

Cheers

Welcome to the forum.

I guess you mean you have adjusted the nav volume in the SET menu (i.e. press MENU button, choose SET, choose Nav Volume and adjust). That will only alter the volume of the voice relative to other sound sources. Having done that, if it remains too quiet then you need to alter the absolute volume which for some reason they hide away in the service menu. Follow these instructions:

1. With car switched off, insert key and turn to position 2 (but don't start)

2. Press and hold the SELECT button for about 12 secs until you see the screen change (The SELECT button is one of the functions of the TONE/SELECT button, but you must press the right hand side - it is a common mistake to think it is a single button)

3. Release SELECT button and press it again briefly - you should now be in the hidden service menu.

4. Using the < > key (below TONE/SELECT) move through the service menu to find TP Volume. Adjust this from its starting point of 0 to around +6 using buttons '1' and '2'.

5. Turn the ignition off to exit the menu and the deed is done.

You can always go back and fine tune the absolute volume, but +6 seems about right to me so is a good starting point. Don't be put off by the name 'TP Volume' which you might think only controls those annoying radio traffic announcements. It doesn't.

Hope this does the job.

I tried to get in again to increase fully but I cannot get into the service menu now...does it only let you in there once?

There's no limit to the number of times you can enter the service menu. Try starting with the car locked, unlock it with the remote key, then turn key to position 2 and follow instructions again, but this time set it to +9 (the range is -9 to +9 so make sure it is positive). It should work.

Let me know how you get on.

Very strange, +9 should be annoyingly loud. I guess the software is fine but the things I would try next are:

1. Enter a destination, and begin guidance, then press the right hand knob twice which should make it speak the last instruction. If your system happens to be in mute mode this might resolve it, although usually mute mode only lasts until you restart the car.

2. The nav computer is fairly easy to access in the compartment on the left of the boot space. Try and reach round the back and ensure that cables are plugged in firmly.

3. Press the MENU button and choose the Set menu - let me know what is written in the top right of the screen (something like SW 4 - 1/80)

Cheers,
