Can I lower my X5 for under $500?

I have done a search and read many posts about lowering the X5, but I can't seem to put together how much lowering is going to cost. Basically, I have an 04 X5 4.4i sport with running boards. I can't stand my running boards, but want to keep them for the looks. They were already on when I bought the car. I always rub my calf on it when getting out. I think you have to been at least 6' tall to clear it without stepping on them when getting out. I'm 5'8".

Will lowering the car 1"-2" solve my problem? (and it does look a lot cooler too!) I will definitely lower it if I can do it all for under $500. Is that possible? I have 19" wheels.

Thanks in advance.

Lowering the car will not solve the problem IMO. The issue is the protrusion from the side of the car, ie: the running board. Not the distance to the ground.

IMO you also couldn't get the car lowered for > $500.

Not sure if it will solve your problem, but You can lower the front and back for about $400 plus install. Search the classifieds under "endlinks". It will show the product I've been selling for the sport model X5. Rob

You may try offering to swap your running boards for someone's OEM rocker panels? I don't like running boards either. We have the same colors inside and out. Enjoy

I like the look of the RBs, but it doesn't seem pratical to have them so high up. 8" lower would have been perfect IMO. Oh well, I think lowering it will help just a bit, and if it doesn't, it will still look better.

I just got a quote from a local tire shop for HR kit, installed and aligned for $717. $460 kit, $180 install, $77 align. Should I try to do install myself? The most i've done to a car myself is change the tire and put Zaino on my wife's car... which was a real PITA!
