E39 (5 series) speedo cluster on a X5 E53?

Does anyone know if a speedo cluster from a E39 (5 series) will fit a X5 E53?
My X5 cluster is knackered and I need to replace it, a UK spec one is proving quite hard to come by but my local breakers yard has a E39 one.
They look identical from the front and the connectors at the back are the same. Has anyone done this before?
If they can be interchanged is it possible to recode them with the correct mileage for the car? My local BMW dealer seem to think its impossible and you can only code a new (blank) one not an existing one thats already been programmed.

I can't say for sure if the E39 and X5 clusters can be changed, but something tells me they can not.

However, I am certain that a used X5 from another truck can in fact be re-coded and used in your current X5. You don't need a new one.

It cannot be reprogrammed as such. Any milage displayed will also have the "Tamper Dot" displayed also.
The dealer will have to reprogram the cluster to the car.

From what someone told me who can reprogram them recently is that the mileage is stored in four places on the X5.

Cluster
LKM (Light Control Module)
EWS
Key

The cluster can be replaced with a similar model (same front and same sockets at the back) but will show the tamper dot if the software and epprom versions aren't the same.
My X5 has a m35808epprom apparently which holds all the mileage and vin info. I've got to source a replacement cluster which has the same epprom - somehow

My local dealer refuses to reprogram a replacement cluster and will only program new ones (bought from them obviously) This is apparently because they can't change the VIN of an existing cluster... even though it can be done elsewhere..hmmm

Replacing the EWS Module on a 2001 X5

The LCD display on my instrument cluster was fading out. A local shop took the instrument cluster out for repair and put a temporary one in place instead. Now when we put the original instrument cluster back in, everything works great except when i took the car in for service at the dealership, the key reads mileage of 61000 instead of 24,000 miles that the car actually has.

the dealer said because we switched out the clusters temporarily, the EWS module was damaged and I need a new one ($500).

Whats the harm if I dont get the EWS module replaced? the instrument cluster seems to be recording the correct mileage still.
