How long can a battery last?

I have a 10/01 build and it's still using the original battery. I'm thinking that should I change it before it died or just wait.
How long a battery usually last?

thanks

Good question. I've got a similar aged battery. Just got home from a 2 week vacation and it was completely drained (2nd time, also happened in 2005).

I charged it up and it's running fine. I feel like I'm running on borrowed time.

Five or six years is a good life for a lead acid battery. I would change it now while you can.

Most OEM batteries seem to die within a few years. My'01 is on the third (at least) as the battery I pulled was a VW battery the dealer "missed" while doing the CPO.
Exide replacement has a much better expected life.

You're on the outward perimeter, I suspect...
my '01, 8-'01 build, is also still on the orig., but
I think that when I get home for the season,
it will be close to being "done".

I have mine on slow trickle, stored for the winter,
but one of my first things to do, will be to get a new one.
5+ years is a helluva run and it's probably time for yours and,
mine.

BMW batteries = Poo Poo.

I told the dealer today I thought the 545's seemed week. Turns out it was low on juice from sitting for 3 weeks at the dealer.

Any flickering lights or weird electrical changes?

I will definetely get a new one, mine was as old as yours, I knew it was on borrowed time and I procrastinated to change it, finally it failed to start the car one cold day and I ended up havind to call AAA and ended up being late for work.
Btw, don't get it from the dealer, too expensive.

Time to replace, my friend. Luckily, my battery died in the driveway and not while I was 500+ miles away from home with the family. Anyway, here's a link to a thread with some good battery replacement info. Keep us posted on how you make out!!!
