damaged my roof rails

So today I committed the ultimate oops... I pulled through a covered drive with two mountain bikes on my roof rack. The yakima held firm until my fork busted and eventually drug the yakima cross bars toward the back of my car which really torqued the factory rails. So the end result was two bike mounts are trash, one factory rail, one set of forks on a mountain bike, two bike seats, a nasty scratch and ding just above the rear side window from the pedal hitting, and a double ding on the back tailgate from a piece of wood that fell from the overhang. Not a great day. Hoping to get over to the dealer this week to find out what the damage is going to be on the X.

Anyone have a part number handy for the roof rails? I know for sure I'll have one to replace so trying to see if I should just replace it myself.

You are totally correct... I'll try to take some pics tomorrow. Today I just wanted to slump in front of the tv with a beer.

Thanks for the part number post! I have a 4.4 but I think they are the same and will check realoem to make sure.

Judging from what you've said puting the bikes on roof is not a safe idea. Is it possible to put some sort of rack on the rear of the x5 and hang the bikes there? I've seen someone do that on the highway.

WoW - sorry to hear that - that sucks. Did the body around the mounts sustain any damage, i.e. will you be able to mount new rails without fixing anything else? You may want to take it to a dealer or a body shop to let them have a look... GL!

One of the risks of putting bikes on the roof is forgetting about them and hitting something. Same problem exists with pickup campers, sometimes people go into underground parking lots with them, or at least attempt to. A common idea is to put something on your sunvisor or mirror, like a reminder, so that you remember they are there. That said, there are downsides to putting bikes on a hitch rack. For my part, I use a roof rack because I have never hit anything with roof cargo, I am tall and can load them easily, and I like how the bikes stay cleaner, with less grit. The hitch racks can be much more convenient to load bikes on if you are not tall, they are sometimes hard to load the car around them, they can be hit from behind, they can block rearward visibility, and the bikes can get dirty because they are in the low-pressure area right behind the vehicle. If you get a hitch rack, make sure you have a good hitch, and look at racks that hold the bike wheels in a tray, not ones that clamp on the bike frame.
