I wouldn't go to 87, but I would go to 89 in cold weather. My dealer uses 89 to cure misfire problems here in cold weather. Your 89 may not be the same as ours here, gasoline varies widely across North America.

Premo vs non-premo has been beaten to a pulp in many
threads. I run an occasional tank of "89" in cooler Spring and Fall weather and run it, (89), almost exclusively for long, one day, 600+ mile road trips. Never a burp, hiccup or miss in 5 1/2 yrs and 58K miles. Run whatcha brung...and, yes I can afford premo, lol! GL,mD

I'm going to come out of the closet here and publicly admit that I've always run midgrade (89) in every BMW I've ever owned since 1986. In 21 years I have literally put over a half million miles on those 4 vehicles (2 3-series, 1 5-series and 1 X5) and have never had an issue running 89 octane.
Figuring that the price differential is typically 10 cents a gallon between midgrade and premium, that adds up to $2500 saved over those 21 years. Not a lot in the grand scheme of things but, as Lincoln used to say, a penny saved is a penny earned. Just my 2 cents (actually that would be 125,000 cents )Jeff

What are the benefits to running 89 vs 91? I think i am missing the point.

UCrew,
I knew there were some closet 89'ers among the group, besides JCL & me!
