Anyone else have this problem

My X5 4.4i has about 6000miles on it. Under moderate to hard accelleration, I hear a ticking sound. It is almost the same sound one would hear if there was an exhaust leak from the exhaust manifold or exhaust system. The dealer claims this is normal and they hear it on all the 4.4i X5's.

Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just getting a typical dealer answer when they don't want to address a problem?

Thanks for any help you guys can lend.

Ticking sound??? Are you sure you don't hear a Knocking sound? Please explain a little more in depth here! There are some great people on this forum and that know a lot about the 4.4i engine. Get more detail and give it some time today to get an answer... Good luck...

What mine was...

OK. My 4.4, 06', started whinning at about 1500mis. Took it in and here is the result:

" Evaporator drain tubes contacting driveshaft and transmit noise through cabin.
Test drove to verify complaint. Per SIB 64 18 05 Installed valves at end of both drains. Test drove again to verify noise no longer present.
Part 54-10-7-070-130."

Well it worked. No more noise. Not sure if this helps anyone else.
I will look up the part in BMW OEM.

I have a 4.6 and under hard accelleration I hear a similar exhaust tap, click or something I just cannot describe which lasts a second or two and then disappears...independent mechanic and dealer both said it was normal. Almost sounds like something in the exhaust is opening to accommodate more expelled gasses.

Not sure if this is related, but when I drive on a highway 65mph+ I hear a whining sound also. It's especially audible when the car is in cruise control. It sounds like a contunous and steady a small rev-up, a small wind down sound... Complete cycle lasts about 3 seconds. Any ideas?

Thanks for the quick reply. To me the sound is just like an exhaust leak from the exhaust manifold. It does not sound like an engine knock.

I took SIB 64 18 05 into the dealer, and they said it did not have anything to do with what I was describing (although when I close the center vents, or turn off the air, the noise almost completely goes away).

I may have to take it in when the field rep is there.

Sounds like the same noise I am hearing, except mine does not go away in a few seconds. It only goes away when I let up on the gas.
