Exclamation HELP! sometimes reverse not working.

Hi everyone,

I have just bought a X5 4.4 auto 2000 model.

The strange thing is, the steeper the road gradient, the less powerful the reverse is.
If very steep nothing happens when I select reverse, all you hear is the engine reving.

Can someone please help me with some advice, am I looking at spending big bucks at the main dealer, or is there a way forward.

Mant Thanks

Sounds like your tranny is starting to go. Same thing happened with reverse to my buddies 2001 4.4i. How many miles on it?

HELP! sometimes reverse not working.

I have 130,000 miles on it, with bmw service history. I guess it is bad news. I thought it might have been something silly like low fluid.

I dont know why the hill would have anything to do with it though. Id find a good indy so you dont have to take to the dealer for an opinion

Wow.

Load on the transmission in reverse uphill is greater then load on the transmission on level ground...laws of physics.

130K, it may be trans failure beginning or could be the fluid. Have the fluid levels checked first before considering the trans.

SideNote: Auto trans in the X5 is EXPENSIVE, couple thousand dollars.....check the fluid first
