Performance Center delivery and payment

new here and have a simple question for those who have taken delivery at the performance center.

how were you required to make payment? our dealer indicates full payment is required now for a late july delivery. is this the only option? (assume no financing required)

That was the case when I pick up my 2001 model X5 in year 2000. The dealer told me that performance center would not release the car until they got the money beforehand from the dealer.
