Angry Air-conditioning fault

I have been reading about the air-conditioning faults experienced by some members and in particular about the final stage resistor and wonder if anyone has experienced my problem and can help. I have a 2005 3.0d. Driving back from the coast in a temperature of a nice 26 degrees C, all of a sudden the temperature went haywire. The temperature selector on my side shot up to 32 degrees and despite pressing the down button it wouldn't move. There was a blast of hot air coming from the front beneath the steering wheel. The a-c registers in the dash panel seemed to be emitting conditioned air which was reasonably cool. The passenger's side was OK and still registered 22 degrees and I could move the temperature up or down. I took out, and replaced the fuse hoping the system woud "re-boot", but it was still the same.
Any thoughts or suggestion would be appreciated
Martin

I have heard of the climate control "head unit" actingweird and needing repair/replacement.
