went to change my spark plugs and saw alot of oil in there. took the valve covers off to change the gaskets, they are shot! i'm gonna take this opportunity to polish the covers. i'll post pics of the finished product.

Seems to me that the 100 billion tiny metal particles that would result from sanding away the valve cover in the manner of the OP would need to be flushed out otherwise you'd probably affect the engine adversely. YMMV.
