It shouldn't be all that hard to remove off your X5. Just a matter of removing the acoustic cover, coil packs, plugs, and 11 cap nuts off each side. You'll probably need to replace your valve cover gaskets depending on the mileage of your vehicle.

went to change my spark plugs and saw alot of oil in there. took the valve covers off to change the gaskets, they are shot! i'm gonna take this opportunity to polish the covers. i'll post pics of the finished product.

Hope you plan on changing the oil every 500 miles thereafter.

who are you speaking too when you say to change the oil every 500 miles? and what are you talking about? if this job is done incorrectly i'll be adding oil at 500 miles not changing it.

and i would imagine the finish of the valve covers has nothing to do with them holding oil.

Seems to me that the 100 billion tiny metal particles that would result from sanding away the valve cover in the manner of the OP would need to be flushed out otherwise you'd probably affect the engine adversely. YMMV.
