As a result of all my hours researching this and based on the evidence I have posted with link I am not convinced on this but I will happily revisit my findings if you have anything authoratative to substantiate this.

These codes mean nothing to me & I believe they are not recognised generic OBDII codes, (they don't start with a P for powertrain). I am not daft and have not and would not reset anything!

I had my X5 diagnosed today by the dealer as I had a message "SELFLEVEL. SUSP INACT." continuously.
Prior giving my car for inspection, I ran a TEST NR.14 to see what error codes were present. I had two:
DIAG 1 C7 81000
DIAG 2 BD 90038


Now here is what the diagnostic report says:

LCM - 99 Number-plate light faulty - License-plate light B6300_00016

LCM - 91 Turn indicator, rear right faulty - Turn indicator, rear right B6300_00008
LCM - 90 Turn indicator, rear left faulty - Turn indicator, rear left B6300_00007
LCM - 81 High beam, right, faulty - High beam headlight, right B6300_00004
LCM - 96 Reversing lamp, left, faulty - Reversing light, left B6300_00024
ECH - 01 Ride-level sensor, left - Height/loading sensor B3714_3901N
ECH - 09 Control-time fault "Lowering" - Lower control time B3714_E39REG09
Having that report in hand, I did extra search for "Tank Sensor 1" and found this:

Incorrect Fuel Gauge Reading
Model:
BMW E53 (X5) vehicles produced before August 17 th 2000.
Complaint:
After the tank has been filled the fuel gauge will either not read “full”, or the correct reading will only be shown once the ignition has been switched OFF and ON again. These faults will be stored in the Instrument Cluster:
- Fault Code 8 – Fuel tank sensor 1 (fuel –pump side) and/or
-Fault Code 9 – Fuel tank sensor 2 (without fuel pump)

These errors are caused by a non-conducting deposit being formed on the conductor surface of the fuel level sensor.
Remedy:
Using the DIS or MoDiC:
-Select diagnosis
-Select Function Selection/Complete Vehicle/Body/Displays and Information/Instrument Cluster.
-Select Test Plan
-Select 4 – Expert Mode/ Read Fault Memory to confirm fault codes 8 and/or 9 are set.
-Select 3 Service Functions/ 1 – Test Code
-Press ‘Test Code’ button to save test code.
-Print Diagnosis Report
-Remove and replace the right hand delivery unit and the left hand fuel level sensor. Refer to repair instructions 16 12 000 and 16 12 001.
-Also to ensure a correct installation of the left side sensor use the following procedure:
-Lubricate the small o-ring for the fuel transfer pipe to ensure the o-ring does not push out of position when the fuel transfer pipe is being installed.
-Lubricate the inside edge of the large o-ring seal, so that the fuel level sensor will slide easily into position.
-The fuel level sensor must be installed keeping the top flange square to the tank at all times. Rotate the sensor so that the lug is located above it’s recess, then push the sensor vertically down into position. It must NOT be installed at an angle.
-Using the DIS or MoDiC select 4 – Expert Mode/ Clear Fault Memory to clear the fault code memory.
As per the "SELFLEVEL. SUSP INACT." message, it is clearly because of the faulty ride-level sensor on the rear left. I assume the BD 90038 code comes from there as the braking-force distribution might be linked to suspension.

I don't know what the MRS4 Battery, positive termination error code means but I could figure out the positive cable (directly on battery) has several wires. 2 big red wires and 2 small black wires in one single isulation tube. These wires go along the trunk (left side) to the end of the trunk, just beneath the rear seats. I t just ends there... any help?

Finally, the other codes "LCM" where raised some days ago when I did a full bulbs check/cleanup. It just remains in computer memory. "Big brother is watching you..."

Sorry to undermine all your timely effort but as far as I can ascertain the DIAG data in Test NR.14 only relate to emissions related codes assocaited with the SES light.

DIAG 1 C7 81000 : The thing to do is to ignore the 81 as this i believe the first numbers relate merely to cycle references as to when the car tested itself - IMHO here there are no faults here- the last 2 numbers are 00


DIAG 2 BD 90038 : Using the PDF on my link and cross referencing M62 engine data Hex code 38 relates to a cylinder 7 misfire. This is likely to be a one off ( as the code is not repeated) but may point towards other things. If car running fine and No SES light on then dont even worry about it- just bear in mind..........if it keeps throwing the code the SES light may activate then yu can run another test on NR.14


Sorry but the other codes mean nothing to me and I am assuming they relate to BMW systems in workshops & not Test NR14 data. I dont have info to be able to give any conclusive interpretation of this data.

It would be more than a coincidence of having 2 fault codes in TEST NR. 14 and two "INSTRUMENT" fault in the diagnosis report starting with the same hexadecimal code:

DIAG 1 C7 81000 : INSTRUMENT - C7 Tank Sensor 1 (fuel-pump side)
DIAG 2 BD 90038 : INSTRUMENT - BD Electronic braking-force distribution - Instrument cluster (IKE High) kom

I interpret the "IKE High" above as oposite to "Base" Instrument Cluster. I do have the high one with 20 digit readout

jmagne - Interesting - re C7 and BD albeit confusing - I will keep an open mind (see footnote)

Thinking a full list of hex codes would be useful I found this link to peake research which shows manual content in PDF for their readers which read hex

Page 6 or right of 3/22 on pdf, (for tool R5 SCX3), shows list of tables for cars up to 1999 in that it tells owners which table to use for their car and is clear as to which table relates to which car. For cars after 1996 it suggests owners should look at page 10 but the formattting seems out and I cant seem to view an index link with specific models - frustratingly this means I dont know which table to use for my 12/01 build 4.4, however, by a process of elimination I can only find one hex value 05 which relates to pre car 02 sensor and sits in a table which relates to an 8 cylinder car. I know that 05 is last 2 digits as per code BF88005 that I had when I prior had the precat bank 2 lambda/02 sensor failure. The code 05 was also the one I came up with on page 16 of the chart referred to clicky here
as linked in my earlier posting.

I am pretty confident that the same table "0F" in the peake manual (As on PDF page 7 or manual page 13) relates to the M62 (B44) engine as fitted in early 4.4i BMW X5.

I stand to be corrected and will keep an open mind.


Footnote for jmagne - Incidentally I couldnt see anything re suspension or brakes in the peake reserach manual albeit I appreciate our discussions are based on the abilities of test NR.14 and not the abilities of the peake diagnostic equipment.
