4.4V8 286 and 320 HP: differences.
Yesterday I tested a 4.4v8 x5 mod. 320hp and I really have to say that it seems to be not so aggressive like the previous 286HP Do you have the same sensation?
The old model, when starting at the traffic lights, was incredible, it push you in the seat in the first seconds. The new model is more progressive, not agressive. What do you think? |

A couple of people have noticed this. I think it might have to do with Valvetronic and maybe (I haven't looked at the specs of these engines) the older 4.4 makes more torque down low? Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in

It is definitely not slower, though valvetronic may make it feel that way.
315hp/324tq, the rpms are nearly the same for both motors. The older 4.4 utilized a 5 speed automatic compared to the new 4.4's 6 speed, which may loose some instant pull feel off the line do to gearing. The new 4.4 is only 3 ticks shy to 60 from the beast 4.6, which isn't bad of course it isn't any 4.8. Automobile magazine had the following: 2001 4.4 at 0-60 in 7.1 and 1/4 mile in 15.6@89mph Motortrend had this: 2004 4.4 at 0-60 in 6.9 and 1/4 mile in [email protected] Seems to me the latest rendition of the X5 4.4 is guided more for fuel economy then "power feel", even though numbers say that the new 4.4 is faster and 315hp as opposed to 285hp...probably is.

In a straight out drag race, my new 4.4i outran an older 4.4i it does feel slower, but the increased fuel economy is better overall for every day use.

what you are feeling from the older engine is better throttle response than the newer engine. It makes it feel faster when it gives you that immediate power but as soon as it gets going the new engine will blow it away. The valvetronic slowed the throttle response down a bit so that we can get more power with better gas mileage. It is a great technology for and everyday car but you will never see any Mcar like the new V8 M3 or V10 M5 and m6 with it because of that lack of throttle response that it gives. all in all i am glad my X5 has Valvetronic but if the M3 came with it i might switch to porsche.

As you can see from the difference change in 0-60 and 1/4 mile the 1320ft covered sees a gain from the newer 4.4, though it may not jump the older version it will run it down before the quarter ends.

Ok, but practically the valvetronic reduce the sensation: so where is it better?

Where is the new engine better than the old one?
In every aspect. More power, better fuel economy and what not. It's just the introduction of Valvetronic on the engine adds a bit of lag on the throttle.

![]() Ok, but more power with lag on the throttle for me is a nonsense. I prefer more throttle. The power without response has not sense! |

You're telling me. I'm trying to find out if there's a way to fix this is something.
I hate having my friends hand me my ass at the line, when I know I have a faster truck.
