If you can save up more, the 2004 models were more refined with a new front as well.

Yeah I feel the same way. I love my X but I would definitely liked to have had a facelifted version, with the panoramic sunroof. Didn't know to much about it at the time though.

Personally I like the pre 2004 model. The "facelift" does nothing for me. I would definitely look for a Sport model. If you want any upgrades or mods try to locate one that already has them do. Will save you some money!!

Learn what options are available, choose the ones you want, don't settle for less. Getting the right options and colors is essential for your longterm enjoyment. Have an unbiased BMW mechanic check it out. A 2002 would be a great ride. Good luck

I read on edmunds that the 2004+ have over two thousand new parts over the 2003 versions.

Go for a 2004+ not just cause of the face lift but because of at least these:

More HP
Xdrive
Panoramic sunroof
6 gears instead of 5
Angel Eyes (see below)
Adaptive Xenon (they turn with your steering wheel)
Valvetronic (4.4i is more fuel efficient than 3.0i)
BMW Assist with GPS
MP3 CD player Ipod adapter

Options are much better on the newier one's but lets not kid ourselves, newier model means more $$$$$ did we ask the guy if he can dish out the $$$$$? 02 is a good buy, I myself like the pre models, just my 2 cents... Just make sure the car runs good and is solid in pick and the engine runs smooth. These cars are great and durable, just make sure you do the proper maintainance around 60k or 70k so that you wont find yourself dead on the road... Good Luck...

Awesome example of why to get 2004+

Along with a strong motor in the 4.4, a valvetronic motor and improved X-Drive.

18 thousand quid probably isn't gonna get him a V8 guys........unless if the resale is that bad over there.

The powertrain on the 3.0i is unchanged throughout the entire E53 cycle. Same M54 motor, 5-speed auto. You may be able to find a 5-speed manual (upgraded to 6-speed in '04) if you are lucky, although the gearing on that can be a bit short.
