newb question - xenon headlights

Hi everyone, i'm a newb here and I just purchased an '04 3.0L X5. It has regular halogen lamps and was interested in upgrading to xenon, what do I need in order to do this (I'm thinking its not as easy as swapping in a xenon bulb)? Also, I noticed some folks mention that they have projectors and some don't, what's the difference and how can i tell if i have projector headlights as well? Appreciate the feedback...
