12.9 MPG, wth???

Hello,

Ok, i know i city drive here in San Francisco alot. Big hills, lots of stop signs, and traffic.

But 12.9 MPG? I even reset the gauge to make sure it wasnt just tracking overall. But it's been about 3 or 4 weeks of driving.

Something's gotta be wrong. OK, also 2001 X5, sure things gets inefficient, but cmon!

Any suggestions? Or similar symptoms? Advice?

i think you sort of answered your own question here. if your x is 4.4 its gonna consume more gas.

yeah, but i was getting 16, 17 MPG city and 19+ highway for a while.

just lately, not sure if its my driving habits or maybe some sort of issue i am not aware of. but it is 6 years old, maybe i need to fix something?

I have a 2006 3.0 and I have averaged about 14.5 mpg since I got it a year ago, and that is with about 75% city driving and 25% highway driving.

Look at the instant fuel consumption meter more, and watch the right foot. For everyone's information, it takes huge amounts of fuel to accelerate at low speeds, esp. from a dead stop.

Once from a dead stop, I pushed the throttle abruptly to 50%. It took 83.1 l/100km that first couple seconds to get moving...........that's about 2.9 instant mpg. And I have a X3 2.5i. And it gets even worse when the engine is cold. Routinely, cold engine light accel nets about 2.4mpg.

In addition, remember you are getting 0 mpg when you're stopped. The computer takes that into account, so if you're stopped for long periods of time, you can get low readouts.

The tips above are valid in lowering fuel consumption. Check tire pressures (when cold), engine air filter, reducing weight in the car (take out the dead bodies in the trunk).

For the record, I routinely get 19.5-21 miles to the gallon. All time high was 27mpg average on a highway trip, all time low was 9.8mpg while doing all city driving in Baltimore. Man that was stressful.

Mine is 2001 4.4, 18MPG, 90% highway, 10% city

I am from Hong Kong. My 2001 X5 4.4, before reset the gauge, around 15L/100 KM (15.7 MPG); after reset the gauge (3 weeks ago), 17L/100 KM (13.8 MPG). In Hong Kong, 85% city, 15% highway.

Roger, 17L/100km is pretty high gas consumption. BTW, are your 19" rims still available? I want to change from 17 to 19"

Sorry, the 19" rims are sold long time ago.

Regarding the fuel consumption, in Hong Kong, we always have stop-and-go all the time and traffic conjestion, also we have lot of up-and-down-hill road, we do not have too many highways to go, so driving in Hong Kong is just like driving in New York city, fuel consumption is much higher than other place.

I will try to replace fuel filter and air filter and a bit later to see if the fuel consumption will get lower.

Are you also in Hong Kong or just born in Hong Kong?
