Question Interior Air Flow Control - 2002 X5 3.0

After fixing a problem with the interior fan (replaced final stage unit) - I discoverd that the control that directs air to defrost/floor/vent stopped working (manual climate controls). I found the different cables (when I had the sides off of the console to replace the final stage resistor) and discovered that only the cable that controls the vents is activated by the control knob. I can manual open and close the defrost and heater vents by moving the control levers manually - but the control knob does not move the cables. The cables are connected to the lever - so I must have a problem with the cables connected to the control knob or broken cables.

Has any one experienced this problem?

How do you remove the panel with the air flow control valve (and has the fan control and temp control)?

Do I likely need a new control valve?

Is it common for the cables to disconnect at the control valve and can they be reconnected?

thanks

Not a lot have the manual AC so this may not be a common failure [point.

FWIW here is a listing of the parts. The site is available on the home page listed as "BMW Online Parts...."
