Can the X5 Off-Road on the Beach?

I was in Outer Banks, NC with my X5 last week, and they had a beautiful beach for off-roading. I nervously ventured out (and it seemed to do OK), however, I quickly returned to the safety of the paved roads because I had no idea if the X5 was up to the task.

I have a 2005 X5 3.0 with the standard Michelin MXV4 17's.

Anyone with experience here?

Would really depend on the sand you drove on, hardened sand...probably, regular beach sand (non compacted) probably not. You would probably bog down the wheels and the sheer weight would drive you into the ground IMO.

I'm confused. WagnerX5 says probably not, and the youtube video shows an X5 climbing mountains of sand.

Anyone with actual experience?

That mountain is not beach sand. You can do a search on the site to see if anyone has done this before.

I'm certain

I'm absolutely certain the vehicle could handle it, but I wouldn't risk it. There's lots more electronics on a BMW than on your standard dune bug, and I'm sure I wouldn't want all the dust and grit that could accumulate in it.

Would I do it in an emergency? Yep, but just for fun? No way.

A quick search (beach+sand) turned up the following. Looks like the X5 handles beach sand pretty well - as reported by JV, X5downunder, X5SA and others.

Just make sure your CV boots are not cracked open.

A few turns with the sand on naked CV joints, and you're toast.

You are just fine driving out on the beach as long as it is not dusty fine sand. Stay out of the water simply because salt water is very corrosive to metal and electrical parts.

In sand, the wide tires, moderate weight, and lack of agressive tire tread are bonus factors. Sand is different than most other types of off-roading in this regard. You may need to disable the DSC to allow some wheelspin.

Are you kidding me! The X5 can handle anything that a ford, chevy or any other 4WD vehicle can handle..... just in comfort! If you are trying to pull a 2000 lb trailer on the beach.... yes you'll get stuck (just as any other SUV would) but just driving....it'll be OK. Drive with sense and if you get stuck so what......... dig it out and hit it faster the next time. Have fun with your X5 or park it in the garage.... your choice!
