I did the installation of my Supersprint exhaust this weekend. The Trox bolts are a pain in the ass to get to! Even with loostening the mufflers letting them drop to get more room did not do much.
My 1/2 in socket wrench with a 3/8 adapter was too big to fit and the 3/8 was just a tad short. I did find that not putting the Torx socket all of the way onto the socket wrench gave me that extra lil bit that I needed. Also removing the hitch cover enabled me to get my hand in there to help guide the Torx socket.
Oh! I used some blue painters tape on the exhaust tips to protect them. With all of the wrenching and then the bolts coming out there is a potential to scratch them
To unhook the PDC I needed to go into the "trunk" and remove the plastic (two 10mm plastic nuts) under where the subwoofer is. You will then find coupling for the PDC wiring. To uncouple it you much depress the "locking" part and then pull down the "lever" part. The PCD wiring and rubber grommet is then removed. You will probably want to do this step first. That way your bumper cover will not be in the way of you gaining access to the area.
The bumper cover can be removed by one person. I used two storage bins with padding on them. It is cumbersome but not that heavy. To put it back on I needed another person. You have to lower it down a bit to clear the lower part of the rear gate and get the side bits fitted into their guides.
I was planning on removing the exhaust system myself. When I jacked up the rear of the X (used jack stands also!) and took a look at the bolts at the rear of the resonator I was a bit dismayed. There was no way for me to reach the bolts on top. Additionally, I had a terrible angle on the lower bolts. After 20 minutes of thinking I made an executive decision. I would take it to the pros!!
I went to Meineke located in Sunrise. Very professional. The fellow doing the installation had a hell of a time with the bolts connecting the pipes to the resonator. He had to get up in there with a sawsall to cut them. He did a nice job (Only the bolts nothing else!). Boy am I glad I took it to a shop to have done!!! It only cost $95..... money well spent!
The Supersprint exhaust has a decent tone to it. For me it could have a bit more of a rumble. Mind you this system was used and probably has about 3,000 miles on it so it should be "broken in". I am Considering the X-pipe. The exhaust tips do have a little bit of an angle to them.... I thought they would be straight. Also, they do stick out farther than the stock tips. One odd thing, under heavy acceleration 5,000 - 6,000 rpm there is a kind of put-put popping noise in addition to the usual engine tone. Anyone else with a SS exhaust experience this?
And after all of this I have one question... can you install an exhaust system without removing the bumper cover??? All of the pictures I have seen of installations showed the bumper cover off. It sure seems to me that with the X on a lift you could drop the front of the exhaust and get the tips out.
