A number of people have complained about this. Did anyone get a response to this issue?
Sometimes the Germans should just leave well enough alone

My '04 4.4 with the sport package is a rocket off of the line, but just recently started exhibiting that behavior. I have about 4500 miles on it and coincidentally, I was reading a quote from the head of BMW just yesterday talking about the new 3 series and IDrive and he said that it takes about 3000 miles for the car to settle and idrive to configure itself properly before it reaches it's full potential. I'll post the full quote when i get home, the mag is in my living room.

2004 and later 4.4s have valve tronic. They do not have throttle bodies. There is a small loss of throttle response due to the valvetronic engines. But the overall benifits of valvetronic outwieght the small loss in throtle response. If you put the old 4.4 or current 3.0 against the new 4.4 the old ones might get a jump on the new one but it will catch up and blow it away before you hit 40mph and the valvetronic gives it a huge increase in gas mileage.

I'm having a similar problem with my 2005 4.4 Sport. There's a noticeable dead spot at WOT off the line. My X5 hesitates or stumbles when the pedal is to the floor. I can avoid this with progressive pressure on the gas. I've read other people complain about this on the forum.
Does anyone know of a dealer fix or is this "normal"? |

I recently changed my exhaust and I Just hit 3000, I was thinking that my Computer needed to be reprogrammed so I was going to tackle this on the weekend. So now I am wondering if the change that I am experiencing is related to the computer just now adjusting or the exhaust......

You're not the only one. I get the same dead spot on occasion when I floor it and then all of a sudden a massive jolt forward when it kicks in. I find this can be quite dangerous as sometimes when you need to make a quick turn right/left across traffic in the opposite direction you end up being stuck in the middle with cars coming full whack towards you and on a number of occasions I have just managed to move out the way in a split second of causing a collision with other vehicles. Have had BMW look at it but they have been unable to recreate the dead spot on test drives.

The lag is the reason you wont see valvetronic on the M3. Good for gas mileage but adds complexity and weight. I personally dont like this tech from BMW. If throttleless was the way to go, you would see it in Formula1 first. The venturi effect of the throttle is paramount in low RPM regime. The short shifting and valvetronic are for the sole purpose of meeting EPA.
If not mistaken, the M3 has one throttle body per cylinder! Speaking of the M3, anyone else thinking about getting the best M3 ever made before the V8 version takes over. |

The new V8 M3 will not have valvetronic just like the new V10 in the M5 and M6 do not have valvetonic. So dont worry about it. Just wait for the new M3 because it is going to be nasty. and will run circles around the e46 m3.
No Mcar will ever have valvetronic. Because of the loss of throttle respose and smothness and predictability of linear acceleration. Valve tronic is only good for gas mileage which is why all other BMWs either have it or will have it. I think it is a great technology for an everday car but it would suck on an Mcar. |
