Please Help.. suspension issues?

Hi, I have a 2001 4.4 liter X5. I notice that there is some play in the steering wheel, by this I mean you can move the steering wheel a slight bit before its seems like it "catches" or starts to turn the wheels. Its not too much, however, I know its not normal. Before I get raked at the auto shop, could someone tell me what could be some of the issues, is it the rack and pinon? some parts that normally wear out, I have 51K miles on this car.

either tie rods or steering rack.

our tie rods were done by 70k.

most likely tie rods !! mine were replaced @ 35k..

Thanks for responding, do you know how much the cost is? so I know I am not getting screwed over from the shop?

2 hours labor max + alignment and parts.
