i have a 2004 4.4 sport, with factory 19's and diamaris
i took mine to get an alignment....told them to reduce the rear neg. camber as much as possible....looks like it will slow down the wear, but its still wearing faster than the rest of the tire. try running slightly higher than suggested rear tire pressure to increase the wear in the center and even out the tire |

There is another thread on here that says sometimes "In Spec" on alignment is just not good enough.It needs to be spot on!.Getting my stealer to do this properly will be another time consuming battle.The first alignment,the steering wheel was not even straight!.In the UK nobody will align the x5 without the proper software for the machine.So your stuck with your stealer....It goes on! |

Thats ridiculous. Tire brand will not determine how the tire will wear especially with a reputible brand like Goodyear. MXV's are crap tires. I avoid the stealer as much as possible. I was told in the beginning that BMW is the only people that can do the alignment on an x5 till I called around to alignment shops and they said otherwise.
I still want to know of anyone whos tried the method the OP mentioned as a remedy. |

This is ironic because I was about to post something about uneven tread wear on the rear wheels.
I just came from the dealer last week to have AC checked because I can hear a rattling noice whenever the AC is on and gas is pressed. Foreman (main mechanice) rode with me to listen to the noise. But he can't hear anything because he said my tires are loud. So when we got back to the dealer he checked the tires and did notice some wear on my inner rear tires. He said to pump up the air pressure in the back so the load gets evenly distributed and the tires will get even wear. He told me 36 in the rear and 32 in the front. But he also mentioned that I have to buy tires that dont have or as little as much tread design on the inner part of the wheel. He said that makes the noise which in my case I have Toyo Proxes and they do have lots of ridges on the inner wall of the rear tires. I guess, putting more air in the rear is confirmed to be a fix to uneven wear then

The problem is anyone with 20" wheels or larger will have a hard time finding a tire with a not so aggressive tread pattern.
Your advisor told you to get tires with less pattern on the inner part mainly because he's been convinced that a less aggressive tire pattern will not make as much noise, and wont wear unevenly due to the reduced amount of grip it has on the road. A larger profile tire will reduce the road noise you hear on the road. If thats not an option, a softer compound will make the drive a bit more pleasant. I feel that on a 22" wheel and tire combo, 32psi is just way too low. |

I have had a number of alignment issues causing massive rear tyre wear on the inside edge. This was not caused by camber but by rear subframe bushes failing - and this appears to be a common problem. The problem is, the rear subframe bush failing is not obvious - but the cars steering will start to feel a bit vague and I also had squeeking coming from the rear, but the most noticable effect was the tyre wear. If you have a suspension bush issue of any kind an alignment will not sort it out.

I went to an independent bmw garage and they did it in their other cooperating garage and gave me printed picture of before and after aligning. cannot tell anything yet as my tyres are quite new and there is no wear signs yet anyway, but it is a real problem to get wheels aligned for a 4x4 in UK.

I got over 35k on my 19" staggered Diamaris with absolutely even wear - could have gotten another 3-5k, but did not want to head back east to hurricanes and 1"-3'" rainfalls with nearly slick treads (still had not hit the wear nubs in the grooves)
