Tint issues - my X is due for inspection

Hey guys,

I'm lookin for some advice or suggestions. I have 35 % front tint on my windows, which i got done about a year or so ago. Tried to match my rear factory tint, worked out pretty well actually. But, on to the point, my X is due for inspection this month, and since front tint is illegal in NJ, I know for a fact that they'll fail my car. So is there any other option I have? Some gas stations do it, but the ones i visited told me that they follow the law, and wouldn't pass my car because of the tint. I was told by one mechanic to go to Paterson or Newark in order to get it done..Paterson is fine by me, but I need to know a place there that would do it.

Also, I definitely do not want to rip off the tints, and re-tint them after inspection. That's something I would prefer not doing.

So thats my problem, I'd appreciate a swift response, because I really need to get this issue resolved. Thanks in advance

Usually from my experience if you give the guy an extra 20 he will take care of it for you.
Depends on the guy.

From what I've seen asian people help asians, middle easterners help middle easterners, etc. I have several friends with hooked up cars who go to gas stations that pass them when they shouldn't be passed.

So whatever nationality you are, go find a gas station with the same people and ask them.

"puts on flamesuit".

Yeah that's what i've been told by friends as well. The gas stations near where I live flat out said no, that they "follow the law" and wouldn't pass my car because of the tint. Seems as if a couple extra bucks wouldn't have convinced them either, so need to visit some more places i guess haha.

Well if you can bribe them you're lucky, in MD they are insanely serious about inspections and since they are regulated by the State Police, not county, it is even more serious. Last time I needed a vehicle inspected I couldn't find a guy that would not stick to the letter of the law.

Technically, what you did is illegal, so you should remove it and redo it. It is two windows, it isn't going to cost that much.

wagner x - I might end up doing that if all else fails.

Brad_p - Where did you go for inspection lol?! I wouldn't personally want to take that risk, just because if they ask me for some reason to roll up my windows, I'll fail haha.

Did you know this was the law when you had it done?? Seems to me if you knew they were going to inspect it eventually then why do it??

In GA, anything under 35% on the front is illegal, but it is not part of an inspection - we just take a risk of getting a ticket. If we get pulled over, we do the same as Brad said and roll the windows down.

An extra $20 always worked for me. I had almost limo tint in my 330 and I always passed inspection. For what its worth, the inspection shops in the crappier neighborhoods of Boston were more open to discussion. Maybe you need to take a ride through parts of Trenton or Newark?

If you don't get a recommendation here or from someone else make sure that you have the tint discussion with the inspection shop BEFORE they hook you up the OBD. If they say no just drive to the next place.

Worst case you get a failure, rip it off, and put it back the day after you pass. Two front windows can't be that much.
