Noise: Please Help

Hello, I have noticed within last week, I hear some sort of a whistlening noise coming from the underside of the X5. I checked to see where the noise was coming from, it appears directly under the engine in the center. Could this be a vaccum leak? or something major about to happen?

Might be the transmission, I just had the same problem. Does the whistling sound like a supercharger???

This was a 3.0. But some of the info may help rule out other ideas.

Thanks for responding

Thank you all for responding.... It amazes me that a BMW could continue to have so many problems, I have only had this X5 for 3 months... its already been in the shop half a dozen times for various things. I realize its a 2001, however, it only had 48K miles, I thought German cars really didn't break in till 50k - 60K miles... perhaps the statement should be that German cars tend to brake at 50K-60K.

Thanks for the link, I read the comments about the 3.0 that seemed to have the same issues.. hopefully its not my transmission.... I am sure that is a fortune to fix

Not sure what a supercharger sounds like, however, it does seem to come from the bottom center right under the engine..... I will have to take it to the shop one of these days to see where exactly the sound is coming from...
