mirrors moving towards the floor while going backward

Hello,
on my '05 x5 3.0d I noticed that (sometimes) when I move the shift to the backward position the mirrors move quickly so that I can see the floor and go back to their normal position when I go forward. It only happens ebery now and then: does it need to be activated or this behaviour depends on the objects height near the parking sensors ? I didn't find anything about this in the manual.

If you have the side mirror switch set on the left mirror, the side mirror will fold down on reverse. If you have it set on the right, it won't fold. If you have it set either way and it still won't move on reverse then there is a problem.
