Maybe Electrical Issue
I don't know if all X5's do this, but ever since I've owned it the P light on the shifter is always lit. Even with the car off and the alarm on, the orange lights down there do not turn off. Is this normal, or do I have an issue? '02 4.4 It's been going on for months. I have shown it to friends and they say "maybe it's a BMW thing".

the P light? I believe they are supposed to turn off when the car is off...mine doesn't do what yours is doing...

This has been discussed countless times. The concensus is that some models seem to never shut off the parking indicator light; but some will shut it off after about 15 minutes when the car goes into sleep mode. My '04, 3.0i does the latter.
