The dude who owned it before you may have been an independent contractor - carpenter. Carried the mitre saw in the back of the X as he want from residential remodel to residential remodel. Kept the back open so he could listen to tunes as he was cutting trim. Saw dust went everywhere. You're just seeing the places he forgot to clean.
Or, you could have termites.

The sawdust could very well be from his Sub enclosure construction. Most people use MDF to construct the box.
But termites is also a possibility
