Whistling X5 airbox problem-seeking help

My engine whistles at 1600-2000 rpm. When I have the windows down it drives me nuts. : When I took it to the dealer the service advisor told me that they all do that and proceeded to take me for a drive in a new 2004 which also whistled!!

To me it is unacceptable that BMW engineers have allowed one of their models to be built and delivered to with a designed in annoying whistle that comes from the air filter box.

Is anyone else bothered by this defect?

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Thanks!!

I have the same problem on my 4.4 and went to the dealer 3 times for and they say it is normal. How can an annoying whistling noise be f**king normal. I am so annoyed that i had to walk out of the dealership before i flipped out on somebody. Then a FSE looked at it and said it was normal to. So i said if BMW says thats normal than BMW is a bunch of idiots that dont give a crap about the quality of the product they but out anymore.

So i just gave up and deal with it.

But if anyone ever finds a fix let us know.

I also drive a 4.4 and spoke with the service advisor after taking delivery six months ago. I was told the the airbox on the 4.4 was redesigned for the 2005 model and that there is no current fix for the problem although he acknowledged that several customers have complained of this problem. My problem seems more pronounced when accelerating on the highway. If anyone knows of fix please publish same. This is a real blemish on an otherwise great vehicle.

yea like we said it was fixed for 05. What i dont understand is if they fixed the problem on the 05 why cant they just recall the 04s and put th 05 fix on it. obviously BMW doesnt want to spend the money for the recall on every 04 made. That is bullshit and i am pissed off at BMW for this. Every should camplain and say it is not acceptable. I wonder if i get a dinan cold air intake if that would get rid of the problem.
