Qucik question about engine swap

Does the X5 4.4l uses the same Motor as the 01-03 540i ??, if so can a E39 M5 motor fit in a X5 ????, I was just curious because the engines look the same.

I think I found a cross reference online via Google at one time that confirmed this.

engine swap

The oil pan will be the issue. x5 has a cv axle running through it. Oil pick up will likely differ from a "s" engine to a "m" engine.

Remember that the 4.4 used in 2004+ is a valvetronic. IMO, not sure why anyone would bother with a motor swap when you could get a supercharger from Dinan for half the money it would take to do the swap, and have more power.

get a supercharger rebuild motor if you have to. I swapped 2 motors and it is no fun. I had a 332ti and a e36 M3 OBD I 3.2
