Search the forums here. This has been discussed a lot.

The first thing to check is the adjustment of the black rubber stops on the upper hatch. Use a Torx25 driver, loosen the screw a bit, turn the stop to move it up or down, tighten the screw again, and see if the problem goes away. It may not solve the problem, but it's a good place to start.

Good luck,
Dave

I had a rattle that I tried everything that I found here on X5 World. It turned out to be the latch. I wrapped some velcro around the catch part on the lower tailgate and got rid of the noise completely. Just mske sure to clean any oil or lube off so that the velcro sticks to the metal good. All the info on this site has been great.

Hi, I had a rattle in the hatch also. You know how I fixed mine? "Don't laugh!" I folded a buisness card in three and put it on the rubber bumpstop in the rear hatch latch(WINDOW LATCH) Works like a charm. When you open the tailgate the card may fall out though. I tried both sides of the latch, one side is tight and the other had a gap. At first I thought the noise was coming from under the vehicle. I had my other half drive in circles over speed bumps in a parking lot and I crawled into the rear area of the hatch, when I put pressure on the window latch area with my hand, the rattle stopped. Yes people probabily thought we were crazy, but it worked. Obviously over time the latch bumpstops get compressed and don't do their job anymore.

This is a common problem on the X5
If you look at latch bar on the bottom tail gate were the upper gate latches you will see its worn down to bare metal at the top, this is the cause of the rattle, wrap a little cloth tape around it as already suggested and it will go.
