time it took

so, to get to it, it takes around 45 minutes.

to change the filter, it takes 5 minutes

and to put it back 45 minutes

it takes around an hour and a half.

not really

Just that you have to remove all of the cover that is below the tank, which takes the longest. then you have to swap out the filter and put back the cover.

That's it. though, it requires a little manipulation of the plastic around the frame of the car.

on e46 there's a fuse for it that you have to take out, it helps with the gas spilling (a lot less),
i haven't done the X5 yet so i don't know if there's a fuse for it as well
another trick is if you have couple golf tees use them to plug the lines while you change the filter

I used a couple of claps on each side of the hoses (on my 93 range rover). Just clap them down before taking the filter off.

edit: they make claps just for hoses but you can use a couple of vise-grips and then put some heavy rag around the hoses and teeth of the v-grips so u do not put marks into the hose...

Thanks for the tip guys..

Ill have a go at it when i get back from sea..

I thought i saw the filter behind the panels (sylinder shaped) But i guess that was something else..

The humming sound comes from the other side of the driveshaft though.. Under the right side passanger seat.. I guess thats where the pump is located.?
