Exclamation Transmission problem

Transmission Update.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all wanted to share with you a story....
My 2000 4.4 x5 goes to the dealer with check engine on after trans light goes out. Car runs but feels sluggish. Dealer said it would be $1100 to fix needs new control unit. Calls back and said cant get it programmed may need a new transmission. (how does the control unit call for a new transmission?) Calls back and said it is working but not sure how long. Said he has gotten authorization (implying they would pay for it) from bmw to replace the wiring harness. Grand total.....$1700.
I looked at the control unit and the last socket on the right was burned up. The dealer said that the wiring harness gets really hot and water can come through the plastic cover and stay in there. After a period of time this can short out the wires and burn up the control unit. This is why he said he could not program the new one and why the harness had to be replaced.

If anyone has had a similar problem please let me know. If this is the case what is preventing this from happening to all of them??
