Need help in buying 2nd hand tires

Someone local is trying to sell a set of 4 17" Michelin Energy MXV4+, including center caps. Asking $500. Claims that they have less than 3K miles on them. I know full retail on the tires are $200 each. With 30K on my 2002, I'll probably need new tires within a year so I'm thinking of checking these out.

Any advice on what to look for? Never bought used tires before. I still have my brand new spare in the trunk so I can at least have something to compare with. I'm attaching a picture of the tires...
