I believe the post facelift x-drive case can be repaired, but I don't think the 03 and earlier one can.... Is this the dreaded stripped front splines?

Oops sorry, it's a 2001 4.4i and the problem is that a sound is coming from the transfer box and I was told that it cannot be repaired and has to be replaced and I just wanted to be sure that this was true. From what I understood there is a chain inside the transfer box that starts to wear out with time and starts making that sound and will get louder as time goes by. So anyone knows if this chain can be replaced or is the shop right?
