It's located at the 3 o'clock position, tucked under the left cylinder head. Why are you trying to find it?

8 or so aluminum bolts hold it in, if you take it out you will lose your coolant.

here the deal, your x is an 03, so its not that new and the value is not that high either just like mine. so why bother have the dealer replace the alternator for $1200 just like they quoted me? go to pepboys and buy it from them its $199 with $111 core ( you get the core refund when you give them your old alternator so basically its $199) have any of your local shop, even gas station shop could do it (they are mechanics anyway) for 2 hours labor that is $75x2=$150. so with $350 you are done. why give the dealer $1200 while you know they would just do the same. and while you are at it, go buy 2 belts alternator belt and a/c belt and ask them to install them too. the old belt probably has cracks on it. thats what i did. next thing i will do is to buy thermostats and seal, water pump and seal all together for $120 (yes everything) from the advertised website in here or from autohausaz and have my mechanic do it for again 2 hours labor of $150. thats about $270 total. dealer want water pump, thermostat housing replace for guess how much, $1500. hey man, bmw is always bmw, but with a $20K range car i dont want to spend my hard earned money just to get special treatment and a free loaner. my 2cents.
