The battery in an X is not a "totally sealed" battery, like an
AGM style battery; thus, there is hydrogen off gassing in the charging/discharging cycle. Those gases have to go somewhere, so the batt. has a vent tube to discharge any gases to outside atmosphere. My low tech definition, but it's close, lol! Our Xperts can add their 25Cts worth. GL,mD Edit: Good question on "why not a sealed one"...I've used them in my Vette and M'cycles for years with great success.
