=( i think ive got some tranny probs...

recently when i put my car in reverse it doesnt engage sometimes. but when i put it in drive then back in reverse its goes.. and if i press the gas its a bumpy ride in reverse.. so i think its slipping... any ideas on what to check?? thanks

when my battery was weak it showed this sign of slipping bad.. so im gonna be getting the bad changed on weds... so maybe that would be the prob i hope.

Doesn't sound like good news FlipX

My 330D started that one on me and 2km later it was no gears at all and a complete tranny replacement (under warranty fortunately) I'm thinking the battery will have little to do with it but then again the first thing they told me when mine died was that "it's probably a software problem". So looks like a Stealer will have to check it for you m8. Good luck. Really hope it IS the battery and please let us know the results.

Hmm, given it is a 2001 and I'd imagine the mileage isn't 'low' you probably have your trans going out. Do a search on transmission problems..you'll see some suggestions and results.

I had an '02 4.4 that lost reverse one day. Did a bunch of research and it was caused by the small 'ball' check valve that disintegrated and then chewed up the rest of the transmission. All the friction plates were toast. Luckily i had extended warranty and BMW replaced tranny for $50 deductible! $7K job! If you are lucky you will be able to just replace the valve body on the tranny.

i havent gotten a change to look under there yet.. this all happend when i got my batt light on... ever since that happend.. but the alt is fine ive driven it for about 3.5k with it like that just the batt died a few times.. so thats why i hope its the batt.. but when i get a chance i will get it checked in a place that does volvos and bmws only.. to check it they said it was $70 instead of $120 or something at BMW.. how would i check the fluid levels?? since there is no dip stick?

Ps it was 104k miles on it... i think it might be the original batt but i dunno yet till this wed..

I was ready to do the tranny change myself, had one lined up, did my research, got some tools and then realized my warranty covered ..... freakin bonus... BMW actually changed it twice as the first replacement had some strange hesitation. Dropped it off in the morning and picked it up same day - evening! Nice shiny new unit underneath. If you need anything at all look me up. There is nothing special about the tranny - its a ZF unit and there are 10000's out there.
cheers

hey something like this just happened to me. basically it was a dead battery for me. Because something was draining the power, took it to my mechanic and he found it right away - blower motor. But when it died, i got the trans fail safe message. before i found a good mechanic (just moved from NYC to FL) - another replaced my ALT - i have an 01 4.4 with 103k miles when it happened. Didnt have problems with any paticular gear - with dead alt it would drive for a while then shut dwn. good luck!!

i dont have any power leaks... atleast i dont think so. the only reason why i think the batt died is because of the tailgate light.. once i didnt know why it died but i think its because i had that light on again stupid button... hah..

so i just hope the batt is just really weak... the batt has like 11 volts when i get in the car. but once its started it goes to 14 volts..

Anyways.. is there any known tranny sw updates for my my year 01??
